[ARCHIVED] Stargazing Returns to LV in September

In September, there will be a total lunar eclipse in progress as the moon rises and the sun goes down, and the moon will gradually reveal itself as the evening wears on.

Deer Valley High School and Los Medanos Astronomy teacher Jeff Adkins will be leading the nights. He has been hosting public star parties since the 1980s, but over the past few years, his favorite local spot for introducing novices to stargazing has become Los Vaqueros, because it is so dark at night.

He brings a neat laser pointer that seemingly reaches the stars, and allows him to show stargasers precisely where interesting stars, planets and more in the night sky.

He and his students bring lots of telescopes, or you can bring your own.

Stargazing nights are free, though normal parking fees apply. Call (925) 688-8010 for more information or send us an e-mail

Stargazing nights are subject to the whims of the weather. If skies are cloudy, they will be cancelled.
