This program is popular and demand exceeds availability. Therefore, registration is handled through a lottery. The lottery is open every year during the month of August. To enter the lottery, you must submit a Los Vaqueros Field Trip Lottery Request Form. You will be notified if your form was selected in the lottery. Early in September, lottery results will be communicated via email, and booking trips will begin with successful schools.
Once the lottery is finished and you are notified that you will get a trip(s), you will receive an email with proposed dates. You can accept those or ask for other options. Los Vaqueros field trips happen on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You can notate your preference on the form, dates will be proposed based upon availability.
There will be plenty of time to schedule a bus for your trip(s). We ask that you confirm your trip(s) with us after you get confirmation of busing.
The lottery form asks how many programs you will need for the grade level at your school. Only one teacher per grade level per school needs to fill out a form.
The maximum number of students we can accommodate at a time is 40 without prior approval.
We require at least four adults (teachers included) in order to conduct the program, with a maximum of 12. Younger siblings are not permitted.
Prior to your field trip, teachers will receive a packet containing a letter describing the program and outlining how to prepare your class. You will also receive Los Vaqueros Journals for all students. Students should complete the pre-trip activities in the journal prior to the field trip. The journals are also used the day of the program; teachers need to bring the journals with their class to the watershed.
We do not cancel programs due to rain. If it is raining severely, the outdoor portion will be replaced with an indoor activity. If it is only misting or raining lightly, we still conduct the outdoor portion. Be sure to dress for the weather. Umbrellas are discouraged for safety reasons.
No, the field trip is provided at no cost to schools within the service area.
No, it is the school’s responsibility to provide transportation. However, we do need to know if you will be arriving by private automobiles or bus. CCWD will reimburse the school for the cost of bus transportation up to $300 per field trip. If you arrive by car, you will not be able to visit the top of the dam and reservoir; however, you will learn about the dam from a vantage point.
